| CattleTrax System Shines in
Steer Test
The final phase of the Lancaster/Seward County NC
Steer Test has concluded with excellent results for the first group
of steers. The Steer Test was started in late November of 1999 at
Briggs Feed Yard in Seward, Nebraska. This year's test had an
interesting new wrinkle -- each steer was identified at weigh-in
with a unique electronic identification device (EID). CattleTrax,
the advanced animal tracking system developed by the APEIS
Corporation, was then used to perform automatic collection of the
Steer Test data, which consisted of identification numbers, health
vaccinations and procedures, weights at various milestones of the
test, and finally, carcass data.
The CattleTrax System uses a handheld computer with an attached
radio-frequency identification (RFID) scanner to collect the data on
each individual animal. The handheld computer also contains a modem,
which can be connected to a standard analog telephone line to upload
any collected data to the central APEIS database. Once data has
entered the APEIS database, it can be immediately accessed by its
owner via the internet from anywhere in the world.
At the final weigh-out on Monday, May 8, 2000, the CattleTrax
System performed flawlessly, scanning the EID of each animal and
automatically capturing the weight of the animal using a unique
scale-interface which APEIS had developed solely for this purpose.
The newly-collected data was then uploaded to the APEIS database,
where calculations such as Average Daily Weight Gain were
automatically performed on each individual animal.
On Tuesday, May 9, 2000, the first group of steers left Briggs
Feed Yard for slaughter at the Monfort plant in Grand Island,
Nebraska. The CattleTrax System was again successfully used to scan
each steer's EID as it came through the plant. This data was then
matched with data received back from Monfort regarding these very
same animals, and also placed into the central APEIS database and
ready for immediate use.
